Zambia Honeymoon Safaris

4.6/5  –  110 Zambia Reviews

Zambia is a truly thrilling safari destination. National parks such as South Luangwa, North Luangwa, Lower Zambezi, Kafue and Liuwa Plain combine a wild, untrammeled bush feel with exceptional wildlife viewing and superb guided walking safaris. The mile-wide Victoria Falls – the world’s largest single sheet of falling water – is at once a spectacular natural landmark and a hub for adventure activities as such canoeing, white-water rafting and bungee jumping. And while Zambia wouldn’t be everybody’s first choice as a honeymoon destination, it is well worth considering if you want to celebrate your union with a once-in-a-lifetime holiday that’s packed with unforgettable adventures.

7 Questions About Zambia Honeymoon Safaris

Answered by Philip Briggs

Is Zambia a good choice for a honeymoon?

“That depends on your definition of ‘good’. Zambia is not a conventional honeymoon destination insofar as it lacks totally for ocean frontage or any other viable beach holiday options. It is, however, tailormade for adventurous couples seeking an experience-oriented honeymoon that combines a visit to the unique Victoria Falls with exclusive safaris in some of Africa’s wildest national parks.”

1

What are the most romantic places for a Zambia honeymoon safari?

“Zambia’s main attractions are more likely to be described as exciting or spectacular than romantic. That said, the mile-wide Victoria Falls has to rank among Africa’s most romantic non-beach destinations, particularly if you time your visit for the full moon to catch the unique lunar rainbow. There’s also an undeniable romance attached to snuggling close to a loved one below the star-splattered night skies that characterize Zambia’s remote national parks.”

2

Are there recommended activities for a honeymoon safari in Zambia?

“One of the most magical experiences you can enjoy in Africa is a sundowner boat cruise on the Zambezi River above Victoria Falls or as it flows through Lower Zambezi National Park. Otherwise, assuming that your choice of Zambia as a honeymoon destination reflects a yen for adventure, activities tend to be action packed and adrenalin charged. Popular options include bungee jumping or white-water rafting in the Zambezi Gorge below Victoria Falls, a hippo-dodging canoe trip on the Lower Zambezi, and a guided walking safari through the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino) country of South and North Luangwa.”

3

What kind of accommodation can I expect?

“Safari accommodation in Zambia tends to consist of small, exclusive lodges and tented camps that cater to up to 20 guests. While these lodges and camps don’t necessarily offer conventional five-star luxury (most likely your room won’t have a television, a phone or air-conditioning), they do generally exude an ‘Out of Africa’ bush chic aura that perfectly complements the wilderness location. Most lodges and camps in Zambia also score highly when it comes to a scenic bush location, attentive and good-humored service, quality food and wine (the latter mostly imported from nearby South Africa), off-line tranquility and expertly guided activities.”

4

Will we get enough alone time on our honeymoon trip?

“If you’re looking for plenty of time alone on your Zambia honeymoon safari, you may need to specify that in advance. Safaris in Zambia tend to be quite busy and active compared to the average beach holiday or city break. Many camps and lodges will place guests on group activities and have them eat at a communal table by default. If that’s not what you want, most lodges and camps also offer private activities and dining by prior arrangement, though this may attract a small premium.”

5

Are there special honeymoon safari packages available in Zambia?

“In most respects, a Zambian honeymoon package is unlikely to differ greatly from a standard safari tour itinerary. That said, many camps and lodges in Zambia do have dedicated honeymoon suites or can offer honeymooners special packages that include extras such as a champagne dinner on your balcony or a private bush breakfast, which is a full breakfast served out in the bush. If there are other special activities you’d like to do, specify this with your operator when you book.”

6

Can we extend our Zambia trip with a beach holiday?

“Within Zambia, the answer to that is ‘no’. Zambia lies inland of the ocean, and although it possesses many beautiful rivers and lakes, most are unsafe for swimming due to a combination of crocodiles, hippos, bilharzia and so on. This means that if you want to tag a beach holiday onto a Zambia honeymoon safari, it will be in another country. Depending to some extent on where you’re coming from and your flight arrangements, the best option is probably South Africa, where popular seaside destinations include Cape Town, the Garden Route and the KwaZulu-Natal coast flanking Durban. Other possibilities include Zanzibar, Pemba and Mafia Islands off the coast of Tanzania, or the Bazaruto Islands in Mozambique.”
