Safety

Volcanoes National Park is very safe in our opinion. The well-trained rangers will take care of your safety during all activities, including gorilla trekking and volcano hikes. As the activities can be strenuous and you might be out for many hours, always wear good hiking shoes and take a rainproof jacket, a hat, sunscreen and plenty of water along as well.

For up-to-date information about safety in Rwanda, it’s always worth checking the government travel advisories (see the ‘Safety & Security – Rwanda’ link below).

Malaria & Vaccinations

The risk of contracting malaria in Volcanoes NP is low due to the altitude of the park. However, if you are traveling in other parts of the country, precautions against malaria, as well as other vaccinations as advised by your local doctor, are recommended. Protection against malaria includes taking antimalarial medication and using mosquito repellent containing DEET. The best defense against getting bitten by mosquitoes remains covering up bare skin in the evening.

Gorilla Trekking

Gorilla trekking is very safe. You’ll visit a habituated family, and incidents with these gentle giants are almost unheard of. You’ll get an extensive general briefing before heading out and your ranger-guide will give further instructions to keep you safe while you’re with the gorillas. For more information, please check the ‘Gorilla Trekking Safety Precautions' link below.
