Transfer to Umkumbe and Sunset Safari

You will depart from OR Tambo International Airport with a shuttle service or pre-arranged private transfer. On arrival in Hazyview, you will be collected by an Elephant Herd Tours & Safaris guide and transported to your accommodation at Umkumbe Safari Lodge.

After a welcome drink, you will have the early afternoon at leisure before gathering at 16h00 for the 3-hour sunset safari.

The sunset game drive sets off on board an open-top 4x4 safari vehicle to experience the thrills of off-road traversing in pursuit of the legendary “Big Five”.

As the daylight begins to fade, sundowner drinks and snacks are served in a clearing in the bush, after which the safari is continued under the spotlight as you search for nocturnal animals. A wide variety of nocturnal animals and bird species such as owls and nightjars may be seen during sunset safaris.

On returning to the lodge after your safari, dinner is served in the boma around a campfire.

Sunrise and Sunset Safaris

Have a pre-dawn departure in time to view the spectacular sunrise in the bushveld whilst being surrounded by the bird songs and sounds of the bush.

Accompanied by your guide on the open-top 4x4 game-viewing vehicle, you will experience a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity of the thrills of off-roading inside the private reserve in pursuit of the legendary “Big Five” species within the concession.

Breakfast will be served on the deck overlooking the Sand River, followed by a midday lunch.

16h00 sees the start of your next 3-hour sunset safari in search of the elusive species that have evaded you thus far. After sundowners, the search for nocturnal animals, especially the predators that begin their patrols searching for prey, continues. A wide variety of nocturnal animals such as leopards, hyenas, servals, porcupines, bush babies and genets may be found.

On returning to the lodge after your safari, dinner is served in a boma around the campfire.

Final Morning Safari and Transfer to OR Tambo International Airport

Go on your final early morning safari on the Umkumbe Lodge concession before we say our goodbyes to the guides and trackers. We head off for a hearty breakfast overlooking the riverbed, whilst hoping for our last sighting of an elephant playing in the mud or a leopard passing by.

After breakfast you will head off to Perry's Bridge in Hazyview where you will arrive in time to board the mini-bus shuttle for your road transfer to OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg.

A transfer to Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport can be arranged for your onward travels.
