Great Safari Experience
My wife and I used Furaha Tours & Safaris, based in Arusha, as a tour operator for our Tanzanian safari in Aug. 2024, our first trip ever to Tanzania and Africa actually. We had lots of questions and weren’t sure what to expect. Phil, the owner of Furaha, was always available to answer them for us. He was patient, prompt, customer focused and precise in his responses. He was very flexible in customizing our itinerary based on our needs. He ensured that we had the most pleasant experience from the moment we landed in Arusha to the time of our departure. We highly recommend Furaha Tours & Safaris as a tour company for a safari expedition in Tanzania.
Our guide during the safari was Rajab. Getting a great tour guide is a vital component of the safari experience as you would be spending the next 5-7 days or more depending on your itinerary with your guide. Rajab is a fantastic guide with a wealth of knowledge in wildlife, a safe driver and has a great eye for spotting wildlife in the bushes of Serengeti or the grasses of the Ngorongoro crater. He is passionate about his job, has an immense sense of pride to be a Tanzanian, and a great off-road driver on the challenging terrain you will encounter. On our trip, we visited Northen Serengeti with the hope to witness the Mara River crossing of the wildebeest during their Great Migration. Watching a river crossing requires luck, great driving skill and an intuition to predict where a migration is likely to occur. Rajab brought the latter two to the table and with an element of luck, gave us a once in a lifetime experience of witnessing 3 crossings in a matter of a couple of hours, not to mention, with the best spot in the house. On our trip back to the airport, we came across a roadblock to the airport due to the passing of the Tanzanian President’s motorcade who was visiting Arusha for a conference. We were not sure if we would make it to the airport in time and were quite nervous. Rajab worked with a couple of other safari drivers and coordinated a plan to do some off-road driving in the city to get us close enough to the airport to be able to make it on time when the motorcade eventually passed. Due to his actions, we not only made it on time to the airport, but instead, we had some time to freshen up for our long journey back home. We very highly recommend Rajab as he is an exceptional individual and tour guide.
Mandara Hut Day Hike
I did a day hike to Mandara Hut and had an absolute blast! We hiked to the crater which was only a short distance away. The hike was around 12 miles with 3,000 feet vertical and was not to difficult of a hike. Lunch was provided. My guide Elirehema was a joy to spend the day with. Saw a few different monkey specifies. 10/10 recommend.
Once a lifetime experience
We had such a great experience with Furaha! We highly recommend it. You won't regret making that choice.
Even before the tour started, the communication with Phil was always prompt and couteous. From the moment we were picked up at the airport to the moment we were dropped off at the airport (5am in the morning), we have experience nothing but professional service. Our driver and guide were Noel and Vincent and they were so experienced and considerate. I cannot say enough about them. Noel has more than 20 years of experience in the business and Vincent is a young and handsome man with several years of experience under his belt as well. They drive safely and know where to find the animals. I cannot count the times they stop the jeep and point to a direction for us. They see better with their naked eyes than us with binoculars. We saw all big fives on the trip. Along Mara River, we saw 5-6 big group crossings in one morning thanks to their experience. Noel just knew when to wait and when to move on. We were so lucky to have them on the tour. Also, both of them are very knowledgable about animals, birds. plants, geology, and Masai people. WeI have learned a great deal during this short safari trip. We all had a wonderful time and my kids keep asking when we will be going back for another tour. Overall, it far exceeded my expectation and I would not hesitate to recommend Furaha to any friends if they want to take a safari tour there. Having the right guides makes all the differences and we are happy we found Furaha.
If I may make one suggestion: prepare a few masks in the jeep in case the guests don't have their own. The roads in the national parks are so dusty sometimes. It is a small price to pay to see the wild animals in their natural habitat.
Very Accommodating and Knowledgeable
Before planning this trip we did not know what to expect when traveling to Africa for the first time. Phil was very helpful in helping us understand the components of our safari and the prices associated with each component. Phil was extremely quick to respond to any questions I had and helped us plan our safari to what we specifically wanted to see. During our safari, our guide Alais Laizer was extremely knowledgeable about the animals, birds, plants, and trees and helped us understand what we were looking at. Also when visiting Tarangire NP, Serengeti NP, and the Ngorongoro Crater, Alais knew the history behind the formation of these parks and how it affected the different tribes living in the area such as the Massai. Overall Alais Laizer was an amazing guide and his knowledge and warm personality made our first African Safari memorable. The only negative about this trip was one of the lodges (Fig Tree Lodge) which had an infestation of bugs in the bathroom and uncomfortable beds. Other than the other accommodations were great especially the tented camps which we loved. Overall I would recommend Furaha Tours to anyone wanting to go to their first Safari in Tanzania as they quickly respond to any questions you have, have amazing guides, and can help you plan your trip exactly how you want to.
